SFSD and Neighbors Partner to Develop Lincoln Commons
Coveted Central Sioux Falls Green Space Is Getting a Facelift
Sioux Falls, SD (May 28, 2024) - One key to a thriving city is flourishing, well-connected, and active neighborhoods. A new project is growing in central Sioux Falls to promote health, well-being, and a natural connection to education.
The Sioux Falls School District, City of Sioux Falls Parks and Rec Department, along with residents interested in preserving open space in central Sioux Falls, are partnering together to enhance the space at 9th Street and Grange Avenue. This green space is owned by the District and was previously the site of Lincoln Elementary. For years, the District has allowed the community to use the space as a community garden where residents in the historic Cathedral and Pettigrew Heights can plant, grow, and enjoy fresh produce.
After hearing from residents and speaking with city officials, Superintendent Jane Stavem began exploring opportunities to retain the space as a district property while also allowing for enhancements that benefit the neighborhood. The outcome is a new collaborative partnership between the Sioux Falls School District, Axtell Park students, neighborhood residents, and the City of Sioux Falls.
“This project will enhance the existing space, creating a unique learning opportunity for students while also fostering positive relationships among neighbors,” says Dr. Jane Stavem, Superintendent. “We know this space may be needed at a future time as open space becomes more scarce in our fast-growing city. In the meantime, this is a collaborative effort that benefits everyone and will now include students as they connect with the community.”
A steering committee involving all stakeholders—the District, City, homeowners, and students—has begun meeting to discuss the unique features of the Lincoln Commons project and the timeline for bringing these innovative ideas to life.
